Unique collection of Joule’s Brewery memorabilia up for auction

A collection of items relating to the recently resurrected Staffordshire brewery Joule’s, based in Stone for 200 years, is set to go under the hammer at West Midlands auction house Cuttlestones on Friday, 24th February. Split into ten lots, the collection contains some unique items that chart the latter years of this brewing institution; which once exported ales internationally as well as UK-wide.
Among items as diverse as Joules-branded ashtrays, Elkington silver plated tableware, a wall clock, beer tray and fixtures lists from Wolves, Port Vale and Stoke City football clubs sponsored by the brewery, are three lots of particular interest.

The first of these is a bound tome titled ‘Register of transfers Debenture Stock John Joule & Sons Limited’, which covers the period from early 1920s through to 1930s. Spanning the Great Depression era, this is an item of particular historical interest and charts sales to geographical locations from the UK to as far afield as Chicago.

Another unique item relating to the firm’s history is the last John Joule and Sons Visitors’ Book before the brewery was taken over by Bass Charrington in the early 1970s. The names listed are likely to be of great interest to local historical researchers.

Last, but certainly not least, is a Phoenix Pottery Joule’s water jug; a rare item as Phoenix only produced pottery for Joule’s of a very short period of time.

These fascinating remnants of a great Staffordshire firm will be auctioned at Cuttlestones’ Wolverhampton Auction Rooms during next Specialist Collectors’ Sale. The catalogue, containing full lot descriptions and photos, will be available at www.cuttlestones.co.uk from Friday, 17th February. The sale will commence at 10am on Friday, 24th February with live online, telephone and commission bidding options available for those unable to attend. For further details call 01902 421985.
